Living Organisms Unit
Unit Standards:
5.L.1.1 Explain why some organisms are capable of surviving as a single cell while others require many cells that are specialized to survive.
5.L.1.2 Compare the major systems of the human body (digestive, respiratory, circulatory, muscular, skeletal, and cardiovascular) in terms of their functions necessary for life

ANIMAL CELLS:
PLANT CELLS:
- *CELLS ARE THE BUILDING BLOCKS OF ALL LIVING THINGS, OR ORGANISMS
- *CELLS A VERY, VERY SMALL(ONLY SEEN THROUGH A MICROSCOPE)
- PARTS OF AN ANIMAL CELL:
- 1. NUCLEUS: BRAIN OF THE CELL; THE COMMAND CENTER; CONTROLS THE FUNCTION OF THE CELLS
- 2. CYTOPLASM: FLUID IN THE CELL IN WHICH THE CELL PARTS FLOAT
- 3. MITOCHONDRIA: TAKE IN NUTRIENTS AND BREAK THEM DOWN TO CREATE ENERGY
- 4. VACUOLE: STORAGE SPACES IN CELLS FOR FOOD, WATER, WASTE
- 5. CELL MEMBRANE: HOLDS THE CELL TOGETHER AND KEEPS ALL THE PIECES OF THE CELL INSIDE…ALSO KEEPS BAD THINGS OUT
- THE MAJOR DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ANIMAL AND PLANT CELLS: NO CELL WALL OR CHLOROPLASTS IN ANIMAL CELL
PLANT CELLS:
- *THERE ARE MANY DIFFERENT TYPES OF CELLS THAT MAKE UP A PLANT
- PARTS OF A PLANT CELL:
- 1. PLANTS ARE MADE UP OF ORGANELLES(SMALL STRUCTURES THAT HELP THE CELL(S) FUNCTION)
- 2. NUCLEUS CONTROLS ALL OF THE CELL PARTS AND ALSO STORES THE CHROMOSOMES THAT PROVIDE INFO. FOR HOW THE CELL DEVELOPS
- 3. CELL WALL: SUPPORTS AND PROTECTS THE PLANT
- 4. CELL MEMBRANE: INSIDE WALL AND USED TO HOLD ORGANELLES IN PLACE AND KEEP WATER INSIDE
- 5. MITOCHONDRIA: LIKE RECHARGEABLE BATTERIES; STORE ENERGY PRODUCED BY CHLOROPLASTS
- 6. CHLOROPLASTS: ENERGY FACTORY OF THE PLANT(THIS IS WHERE PHOTOSYNTHESIS TAKE PLACE)
- PLANT CELLS ONLY HAVE A CELL MEMBRANE
- VASCULAR PLANTS: PLANTS WITH STEMS AND TRUNKS
- 1. CONTAIN TRACHEIDS(CARRY WATER THROUGH THE PLANT)
- 2. TRACHEIDS ARE CELLS THAT HAVE A THICK CELL WALL WHILE OTHER PARTS OF THE CELL HAVE SHRUNK ALLOWING WATER TO MOVE THROUGH THE PLANT
